Tears Flood in Memory of Jiao Yulu

兰考是一个老灾区，常年遭受风沙、内涝和盐碱等“三害”袭扰，经济发展水平非常低下。三年困难时期，兰考人民生产生活水平面临极大困难。1962年，全县粮食产量下降到历史最低。正是在灾情最困难的时候，焦裕禄来到兰考。

Lankao county was in the region that suffered from natural disasters. “Three hazards”, that is, sandstorm, waterlogging and salinization, struck the county year in year out. Thus the county was backward in economic development. The productivity and living standards of people in Lankao county faced great difficulties during the  Great Chinese Famine. In 1962, grain output of the whole county fell into the lowest level . At the most difficult period, Jiao Yulu,the secretary of Lankao county committee, came to the district.

“焦桐”纪念地

焦裕禄上任之后毫不畏惧，带领全县人民进行封沙、治水、改地的斗争。他身先士卒，以身作则；风沙最大的时候，他带头去查风口，探流沙；大雨瓢泼的时候，他带头踏着齐腰深的洪水察看洪水流势；风雪铺天盖地的时候，他率领干部访贫问苦，登门为群众送救济粮款。他经常钻进农民的草庵、牛棚，同普通农民同吃同住同劳动。他把群众同自然灾害斗争的宝贵经验，一点一滴地集中起来，变成全县人民的共同财富，成为全县人民战胜灾害的有力武器。

After taking office, Jiao Yulu fearlessly led the people of the whole county to struggle against sandy and saline-alkali fields, and to plan and manage the flood . He made himself serve as an example to others. He took the lead to check the tuyere and detect the quicksand when the sandstorm was at its peak. He led to observe the flow of the river, stepping on the waist-deep deluge in the rain-soaked weather. And he also led cadres to visit the poor and provide relief to the masses despite of the appalling weather. He often went into the farmers' thatched huts and cowsheds to live and labor with the ordinary farmers. Jiao Yulu gathered the valuable experience of fighting against natural disasters, which was the common wealth and a powerful weapon for the people of the whole county to overcome natural disasters.

焦裕禄对同志对人民满腔热情。他常说，共产党员应该在群众最困难的时候，出现在群众的面前；在群众最需要帮助的时候，去关心群众、帮助群众。他的心里装着全县的干部群众，唯独没有他自己。他积劳成疾，患上肝病，在病痛折磨下，仍坚持在治沙第一线。

Jiao Yulu was full of enthusiasm for the comrade and the masses. He often said that the CPC members should help the ordinary people when they are in the most difficult time, as well as care them when they need assistance. His mind was full of the cadres and the masses except himself. Under the pressure of constant work, he broke down and contracted a serious liver disease. However, he still insisted on working on the front-line of desertification control.

1964年5月14日，焦裕禄被肝癌夺去了生命，年仅42岁。他临终前对组织上唯一的要求，就是“把我运回兰考，埋在沙堆上，活着我没有治好沙丘，死了也要看着你们把沙丘治好”。

On May 14, 1964, Jiao Yulu died of liver cancer at the age of 42. Before his death, his made only one will to the CPC, that is, "take me back to Lankao county and bury me in the sand. I didn't control the desertification there when I am alive, but I will watch the succeeding generations improve it after I am gone."
